What Is a GLB File?
GLB is the binary container of glTF, the standard 3D format of the web. One .glb file bundles geometry, PBR materials, textures, and even animations into a single self-contained file, which is why game engines, web viewers, and AR toolchains accept it directly. Most AI 3D generators export GLB by default, so it has become the common language for moving a model between tools.
How to Open a GLB File
- Drop your .glb file onto the viewer above, or click Choose File.
- The model parses locally in your browser; large files may take a few seconds.
- Drag to rotate, scroll to zoom; the toolbar resets the view or takes a screenshot.
- Need a different container? Convert to STL for printing, or OBJ for DCC tools.
GLB vs Other 3D Formats
| Format | Strengths | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| GLB | Single self-contained binary; PBR materials, textures, animations; web-native | Web viewers, AR, AI-generator output |
| OBJ | Human-readable, universal DCC support, materials via MTL | Editing in Blender/Maya, asset exchange |
| STL | Dead simple, watertight meshes, universal slicer support | 3D printing |
| FBX | Rigs, skinning, animation curves | Game engines and animation pipelines |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this GLB viewer free?
Yes. The viewer runs entirely in your browser on WebGL; no upload, no account, no limit on how many files you open.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The GLB is parsed locally with JavaScript; nothing leaves your device, which also makes large models fast to open.
Can I open plain .gltf files?
Plain .gltf references external .bin and texture files, so a single-file drop cannot resolve them. Export or convert to GLB first; most DCC tools produce .glb on glTF export.
Can I see animations?
Textures and PBR materials render through the glTF pipeline. The format supports animation, but this viewer shows the first pose rather than playing it.
Where does GLB come from?
Blender, Maya, and SketchUp export it directly, and nearly every AI 3D model generator ships GLB as its default export. For other formats, our converter pages cover the common paths.
